Page Turners: September 2024 News

This month all three groups of Page Turners resume their discussion meetings of the books chosen by all members. One group meets the fourth Monday after- noon of the month and the other two groups meet, separately, on the fourth Thursday afternoon of the month. For information on the Monday group, you can contact me at fozimec@cox.net and for the Thursday groups, contact Steve and Ann Morris at samwrsi@cox.net or Lisa Buchner at buchner47@gmail.com.
This month’s book is The Women by Kristin Hannah. The novel covers a little-publicized aspect of the Vietnam War, namely the men and women who served as doctors and nurses in the combat zones, with the emphasis on the women nurses.
The book is divided into two parts: The first deals with the horrific conditions in Vietnam in which the women served, and the second covers their various lives when they return home. Kristin Hannah does a very good job of describing the living and working conditions of the characters in Vietnam, making the first part a very interesting read. The second part is more typical writing of this author and is, in my opinion, more of a “soap opera.” Her books are extremely popular and this one especially is expected to break all sales records. We should have some widely differing opinions to discuss in our upcoming meetings! And I have to agree with the following statement from Kirkus Reviews: “You’ll wish you could have gone to Vegas and placed a bet on the ending—while it’s against all the odds, you’ll see it coming from a mile away.”
