Garden Club members enjoyed our traditional Barbecue and Picnic at the Beach Bluff on June 19. It was the perfect setting for a celebration, and our thanks go to the stalwart chef and organizers, especially Al Glatt and Suzanne Enis.
At the event, we installed our new slate of officers for the 2023/2024 season and acknowledged the Garden Club Scholarship recipient Linda Cessna who is studying Horticulture and Landscape Design at Saddleback College. Many thanks to our retiring Board members, and welcome to our incoming officers and new members for keeping the Garden Club active for another year.
Special congratulations to our honorary life member Ruthy Stahl, who turned 105 years old on June 15. Ruthy is one of the Garden Club’s original founders, and attended for more than twenty years. The Garden Club has donated money to the Penny Pines Reforestation Project in Cleveland National Forest in Ruthy’s honor.
Be sure to visit the Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area and walk its trails this summer. The Headlands covers about sixty acres, and is comprised of four regions, including the 29.4 acre Dana Point Preserve owned and managed by the non-profit Center for Natural Land Management. The preserve is home to two critically- endangered species: the Pacific Pocket Mouse and the Cali- fornia Gnatcatcher. Several rare and indigenous plant com- munities are found on the site, including southern coastal bluff scrub, native grasslands, maritime succulent scrub, mixed chaparral, and coastal sage scrub. Preserve trails are open daily, 7 a.m. to sunset. The Nature Interpretive Center is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
