Our discussion in June brought out the “really serious” aspects of Klaus Muhlhahn’s heavyweight work, Making China Modern. In a detailed recounting of what the publisher calls “a dynamic story of crisis and recovery, failure and tri- umph,” the book takes readers from the Qing Dynasty of the1600s up through modern times under Xi Jinping, showing periods of glory, downturns, reordering, and transformations that have led to the China we know today.
The Really Serious O(reo) C(ookie) Book Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 2 p.m. in members’ homes. You are invited to join us in reading and discussing works of informative and thought-provoking non-fiction. Contact nortlynne@cox.net for details.
