Both Page Turners groups are back to their season of afternoon
discussion meetings, held on the fourth Monday and
fourth Thursday of each month. Our October selection is A
Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne. Boyne is an Irish author
who has written a number of adult and young adult novels.
He is best known for his young adult novel The Boy in the
Striped Pajamas. The Observer (UK) describes Ladder to
the Sky as follows: “A deliciously dark tale of ambition,
seduction and literary theft . . . compelling and terrifying .
. . powerful and intensely unsettling . . . In Maurice Swift,
Boyne has given us an unforgettable protagonist, dangerous
and irresistible in equal measure. The result is an ingeniously
conceived novel that confirms Boyne as one of the most
assured writers of his generation.” I am sure we will have
very interesting discussions of this book.
We have had a number of inquiries from people who
would like to join Page Turners, and we are looking for a
person who would be interested in coordinating a third group.
Both existing groups are full to overflowing! It is generally
accepted that the ideal number of members for a book club
be 8 to 16 members. That ensures there are enough members
for a discussion if several are absent, but not too many to
make discussions unwieldy. If coordinating a third group is
something that interests you, please contact Frances. It‘s fun
and we will make it very easy for you. For information on
the Thursday afternoon group, please contact Steve and Ann
Morris at sidhewhois@cox.net and for the Monday afternoon
group, Frances at fozimec@cox.net.
