The January book selection for Page Turners is The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. The Monday afternoon group will meet at 1:00 p.m. January 21 (a week earlier than usual) to discuss the book and will then join the Thursday afternoon group on January 24 to participate in the scheduled interview, via Skype, with the author of the book. The Thursday group has arranged this interview and members are looking forward to the event when they will be able to ask questions regarding what they have just read.
Lisa See is a New York Times bestselling author of several novels that introduce readers to various Chinese ethnic minorities. She often travels to Asia to do research on the subject of her books. My personal favorite, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, introduced the Yao people, and in our current reading selection we meet the Akha people, a hill tribe of Yunnan Province. The story centers on a mother and daughter “separated by circumstance, culture, and distance . . .” Lisa See is of Chinese-American descent and is the recipient of several national book awards. For information on the Thursday afternoon group please contact Steve and Ann Morris at samwrsi@cox.net and for the Monday afternoon group, Frances Ozimec at fozimec@cox.net.
