The Really Serious Book Club met at the home of Mary Crowl to discuss various books on the Rothschild family. Its fortunes were founded in 1760 by Mayer Rothchild who sent his five sons to London, Paris, Frankfort, Vienna and Naples to establish financial connections. The family was the subject of many anti-Semitic conspiracy theories culminating in riots in Germany in the 1880’s and, of course, expulsion under the Nazis who seized all of their assets and art. The Rothschilds helped finance the English in their war against Napoleon and aided France in helping to pay its reparations against Prussia.
The family fortunes after Nazi seizure have since been rebuilt and are invested in areas of finance, wines, real estate, and art. Rothschild descendants include writers, philosophers, mathematicians, biologists, furniture designers, economists and even professional baseball players.
