The Really Serious Book Club met at the home of Norton Schwartz to discuss The Food Explorer, a book about the globe-trotting Botanist, Daniel Stone, who early in the 19th Century brought fruits and vegetables from foreign lands that transformed what America ate. He introduced avocados, nectarines, lemons, resistant varieties of wheat and potatoes, cherry trees and more from adventurous travel in exotic places at a time when the Department of Agriculture was staffed with one person. It’s an astounding story of events that changed American farming, citrus and nut productions and
America’s eating habits. It was a wonderful book to review.
The next meeting will be Political Tribe Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations, by Amy Chua. If you would like to join us for these discussions, email Norton Schwartz at Nortlynne@Cox.net.
