Really Serious Book Club: State of Resistance by Manuel Pastor

The Really Serious Book Club gathered for their August meeting at the home of Mary Crowl who led the discussion on State of Resistance by Manuel Pastor. The book revealed California as a muddled and financially troubled state for many governors and administrations, until many small movement groups coalesced to give strength to Governor Brown’s administration.
Brown’s administration now has millions in reserve funds, a forward look on immigration, social services, education and climate change measures that lead the country and are in conflict with Trump administrative policy to the extent that California has 25 lawsuits against Federal Government measures in all of these areas. We have already been successful in a few and many others are pending. Other states have joined us in some of the actions. Governor Brown supported the Paris Climate Accords, no small measure since California is the fifth largest economy in the world. Absorbing migrants, expanding
educational opportunities and housing costs were discussed.
The next meeting will review The Truth about Animals by Lucy Cooke. If you would be interested in joining our book discussions, email Norton Schwartz at Nortlynne@cox.net.
