Garden Club: September 2018 News

While the officers of our unique Niguel Shores Garden Club have been diligently preparing an exciting year of club events and presentations, they also expressed hope that all of you have had a wonderful summer pulling weeds out of your gardens—oops!—I mean, had a wonderful summer enjoying your gardens.
So, here we go with our first meeting of the new season on Monday, September 17, at the Clubhouse. Our topic will be “Butterflies in the Garden.”
Not yet a member and would like to join us for interesting meetings, valuable garden talk, great field trips, and fine refreshments? Please go to the office and ask the staff for an application which is located in the Garden Club file. Please fill out all the information on the application and have it put back in the club file. An officer of the club will contact you. We are all looking forward to another wonderful year!

In the Garden—Everyone has a secret remedy for protection from mosquito and insect bites when outdoors, but does anything really work? Wearing a bug repellant that contains DEET can help, and if you want to go all-natural, there are essential oils that can reduce your chances of being bitten. Try oils of lavender, tea tree, Greek catnip, thyme, soybean, citronella, eucalyptus, or neem. Dilute the oil in water and put the mixture into a small spray bottle to carry in your gardening bag. You should opt for light clothing and avoid perfume, alcohol or rigorous exercise if you know you’re venturing into a mosquito-heavy area because they are drawn to body heat, moisture and certain scents.
