The Really Serious Book Club, also known by friends as the Oreo Cookie Book Club, met at the home of
Norton Schwartz to discuss the thrust and implications of the award winning Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. Issues of tax policy, homelessness, housing subsidies, cultural norms and income distribution were all touched upon with the book as reference. The life experiences of participants contributed to the discussion. While we did not come up with solutions to these pressing social problems, we did clarify and confront key issues involved.
The next meeting, hosted by Mary Crowl, will explore the life of Leonardo de Vinci and the rebirth of science, literature and the arts in Europe at that time, using The Life of Leonardo de Vinci. We meet the third Wednesday of each month. If you are interested in joining us, call Norton Schwartz at (949) 481-2459.
