PageTurners Book Club: The American by Henry James

Page Turners Monday afternoon and Thursday afternoon groups will be discussing The American by Henry James which was first published in 1876/77. The book has been described as a combination of social comedy and melodrama. James writes about the clash between European and American cultures and more specifically about the misadventures of his main character Christopher Newman, an essentially good-hearted but rather gauche American businessman on his first tour of Europe. The meetings will be May 21 and May 24.
Also this month members have been reviewing reading suggestions for next year. Members suggest books and then vote to select nine titles for next year. With suggestions from approximately thirty members we have quite a list to choose from, and titles not chosen make a great reading list for members to enjoy at their leisure. For information on the Thursday group please contact Steve and Ann Morris at samwrsi@cox.net and for the Monday group, Frances at fozimec@cox.net.
