Our monthly luncheon meeting was held on April 12 at the Clubhouse. Three new members, Chris Daley, Catherine Bitran, and Mary Ellen Hoffman, were welcomed into the Club by President Lydia Reese, who presented each lady with a yellow rose.
Our Secretary, Yollie Mancino, congratulated the Women’s Club members who contribute their efforts to publishing and delivering our neighborhood newsletter, The Seashore News, which has recently been honored in a national newsletter competition.
Lydia then announced the slate of officers for next year that will be voted upon at the May meeting: President—Terry Link; Vice President—Christy Manetta; Secretary—Catherine Bitran; Treasurer—Cathy Tyson. Lydia also noted the passing of a longtime member of our Club, Marguerite Printz.
Dana Point City Councilwoman Debra Lewis spoke briefly about the proposed redistricting of Dana Point for future elections. She will elaborate on this issue as our featured speaker on May 10.
After a tasty luncheon buffet, we enjoyed a presentation from Dr. Kerry Burnight, Chief Gerontologist of GrandPad and Director of the Orange County Elder Abuse Forensic Center. Dr. Burnight emphasized how important it is for seniors to stay connected socially with friends and family and not to fall into social isolation, which raises the mortality rate threefold compared to those seniors who have deeper social ties. She has been instrumental in the design and development of the GrandPad, a tablet computer specifically created to help seniors easily connect with others. For more information, she directed us to www.grandPad.net.
The Niguel Shores Women’s Club welcomes all residents to be guests at our monthly luncheons. If you are interested in attending or becoming a member, please contact Barbara Goffman at barbgoffman@cox.net for details.
