Running Stop Signs and Driving Habits: At a recent community forum, several residents expressed concerns about folks driving through intersections and not stopping for posted stop signs. I think we have all seen this in our community as we drive up or down on Niguel Shores Drive. Clearly a lot of us have become very familiar with the streets and the corresponding light traffic and either coast through or don’t stop at all for these signs. Consequently, some of us have become very complacent, and have fallen into lackadaisical driving habits. I suspect that inattention to this seemingly minor violation creeps into other aspects of our overall driving.
Nationwide stop sign violations are consistently one of the top seven causes of traffic accidents resulting in serious injuries. Another incentive to completely stop for these signs is that a citation for this sort of violation can cost four hundred dollars and upwards.
