The Really Serious Oreo Cookie Book Club met October 15 at the home of Norton Schwartz with fifteen members attending to discuss the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo. The book invaded the lives of families who lived by sorting through salvage in the town dump. They were subject to the pervasive corruption of petty officials, lack of government support and physically difficult and unsanitary conditions; yet several individuals were able to persist and emerge with some optimism. Several members of the group had extensive travel in India, but Lakshman Sehgal contributed most to our understanding of the historical background, the religions, the political considerations and the number of growing bright spots in Indian today. Education, technical knowledge, the movie industry, and areas where corruption has been cleared away are all pillars that will support the flourishing of India in the future
The next meeting will be November 28 at the home of Sally Lee Howd where we will review the book The Forever War by Dexter Filkins.
