The Really Serious Oreo Cookie Book Club met once again on July 20 at the home of the esteemed Rich Schwartz, where an ebullient Diane Hearne led a free-flowing and open-mouthed discussion of the book Waiting for Snow in Havana. She challenged each of the twelve members present to analyze and reveal their own experience with the memoir. The response was electric and dynamic. Some hated the author because he was a rich kid in a corrupt political environment, while others loved the sensitivity and élan of the narrative. The politics of Cuba and the role of the United States in supporting dictators was considered. The next meeting will be at the home of Dick Johns on August 15. Our group will discuss Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie. Our discussion will include a ranking of the prowess and variety of her lovers.
