Men’s Golf – May 2012

March 27 had us playing at Talega Golf Club. It was a beautiful warm day at this great course located in San Clemente. The format for the tournament was “Low Net Low Gross-Foursome Play.” I am not sure who created these format games but it sure makes the scoring interesting.

Flight A: first place went to the team of Roy Dohner, Dave Ontiveros, Morry Dohner, and John Monson. Flight B: first place went to the team of Gary Katsuki, Blair McDonald, and Tom McNicholas. Third place went to the team of Mac Brown, Blair McDonald, and Barry Daniel. Closest-to-the-Pin on #8, Kent Wellbrock and on #12, Mac Brown.

The next tournament was on April 10 at the Aliso Golf Club in Aliso Viejo. This is a great semi-private course and the course conditions were perfect. This course has lots of sand and some very thick fescue grass which makes it very challenging.

We had 16 golfers and the format was “Tin Whistle”.

The winners of Flight A: First place 2 tied: Dennis Rosene and Matt Kelliher. Second place: Morry Dohner.

Third Place 4 way tie: Bill Verbrugge, Jack Sweeney, Paul Wager, and Roy Dohner. The winners of Flight B:

First place: Gary Katsuki. Second place: Bob Gutknecht.

Closest-to-the-Pin on #5, Bob Gutknecht and on #12, Matt Fry.

Golf Dictionary: Ace—hole in one. Like an ace in a deck of cards, though not quite so common. Completion of a hole in a single stroke. The odds against this happening are about 45,000 to 1—somewhat worse than the odds of finding a brand-new ball lost in the rough (27,000 to 1) but considerably better than the odds of hitting a perfect drive off a crowded first tee (1,195,000 to 1).
