Where he lived to tell the story of flipping nine times and walking away from what was left of his racer. This footage was shown nationally on That’s Incredible, and indeed it was. Dick is really a colorful guy with an amazing career from dirt track racing to Indy type cars and even owning race teams that fielded several cars in numerous Indy 500s. Now, as owner of Dick SimonYachts in D.P. Harbor, he spends his time in slower moving vehicles but he hasn’t slowed down a bit.
Early August brought us quite an inspirational talk by Al Langer. As a small child living in the Sudetenland, the German speaking portion of Czechoslovakia, he and his entire family lived the experience of massive relocations after the war. All inhabitants of this region were expelled from Czechoslovakia and forced into war ravaged Germany and refugee camps. Penniless, but with his family together, he was raised in Bavaria where they were treated as outcasts. He was able to move to the U.S. as a 21 year old with nothing but a desire to succeed. His career turned out very well and now, as a citizen, he has written a stirring book of his life that stresses overcoming hardships with determination and a strong family faith. Truly a selfmade man.
